“CADILLAC CANYON” EXHIBIT AT HIWAN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

Hiwan Homestead Museum announces a new exhibit opening May 8, 2012.   “Cadillac Canyon: Evergreen’s Upper Bear Creek 1920s-1960s” delves into high society along Upper Bear Creek in Evergreen. Did you ever wonder how high society folks lived and played in Evergreen? Come see “Cadillac Canyon” to find out. See which movie stars visited resorts such as Troutdale-in-the-Pines and Greystone! Learn about dude ranches such as T-S! See the majestic mountain homes that were built in Evergreen’s glory years!

Don’t miss your chance to see how the other half lived—find out why Upper Bear Creek earned the nickname Cadillac Canyon! Please join us for an open house preview of “Cadillac Canyon” on Monday, May 7 from 6:30-8:30 PM. No reservations are required.

DISCOVERY DAYS: NATIVE AMERICANS!

Discovery Days at Hiwan Homestead Museum is about learning through play.  This summer the Discovery Days three-day summer camp will engage and excite kids about history by exploring the living legacies of Native Americans through their culture, stories, and arts and crafts.  Children who have completed Kindergarten through 3^rd Grade will make Pueblo-style pottery, learn traditional survival and hunting skills and explore Native American culture in a full-size tipi!

Ages: for children who have completed grades K-3

Sessions: (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday)

Session 1: June 5-7

Session 2: June 12-14

Session 3: June 19-21

Learn the art of Ukrainian egg decorating (pysanky) at Hiwan Homestead Museum!  This class will be led by Museum Program Coordinator Meghan McGinnes, who has been decorating the traditional Ukrainian eggs for 15 years. Class will be held on Thursday, April 5^th at 1:00 P.M. at Hiwan Homestead Museum, 4208 S. Timbervale Dr., Evergreen CO 80439.  Discover the legends, symbolism, and history behind these beautifully decorated eggs while making one yourself!  Reservations are required for the class and the fee is $10.00 to attend.  To pre-register, call the museum at 720-497-7654.  The class is sponsored by the Jefferson County Historical Society.

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 2 P.M., you can meet Molly Brown, portrayed by famed historical presenter Mary Jane Bradbury.  This program will be offered at the Timbervale Barn, 4132 S. Timbervale Dr. just up the street from Hiwan Homestead Museum. Pre-registration is required and there is a $7 fee to attend.  Molly will tell of her beloved summer home, her excursions to the old Troutdale cabins in Evergreen with her wealthy friends, and her ordeal on the Titanic.

           Born on February 26, 1846, William F. Cody, the man, became Buffalo Bill, the superhero, in the nearly 2,000 dime novels published during and after his lifetime.  As vividly illustrated on their covers, Buffalo Bill confronted ancient evils, unusual villains, and situations no ordinary mortal could manage.  This helped lay the groundwork for Superman, Batman and many other superheroes that would come later.  On Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave will open a new special exhibit entitled “Buffalo Bill Super Hero” as part of its annual observance of Buffalo Bill’s birthday.

The annual birthday celebration will begin at noon with the singing of “Happy Birthday” to Buffalo Bill, led by an entourage of look-a-likes.  Then free cake and ice cream will be distributed to everyone present.  Between noon and 4:00 pm, the event will include a Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley super hero costume contest as well as a buffalo chip throwing contest and other party activities.  The museum, including the new “Buffalo Bill Super Hero” exhibit, will offer FREE admission throughout the day.

During his lifetime William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody became a living legend.  He was a product of the vanishing West; a genuine hero who built a show business career on his experiences.  But much of his legend was the result of the many stories, mostly fictional, written about him.  The early pulp fiction about Buffalo Bill laid the groundwork for the superheroes of the comics that came later. Like Batman he performed extraordinary feats aided by the technology of his time. Like Spiderman he confronted clever villains and strange creatures. Like many of the later superheroes he even had a costume.  “Buffalo Bill Superhero” will feature selections from a collection of 800 dime novels given to the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave in 2011.  It will explore such themes as the ghostly villains, strange creatures of the West, and near death experiences confronted by our hero Buffalo Bill, all illustrated by the colorful covers of period dime novels and magazines.  The exhibit will run throughout 2012, closing in January of 2013.

PRESS RELEASE: VALENTINE’S TEA AT HIWAN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

Button, Button, We’ve Got the Buttons! Join us for a lovely Valentine’s tea on Monday, February 13 at 11:30 AM where you will be treated to a light luncheon in the beautiful setting of the Hiwan Homestead Museum. Harriett Brittenham of the National Button Society, the Colorado State Button Society, and the Western Regional Button Society will be giving a program on the history of buttons, with many examples for you to admire. Bring your own buttons for show-and-tell!

A suggested donation for the tea is $15.00 for the general public; $12.00 for Jefferson County Historical Society Members; and $12.00 per person for groups of 4 or more. Registration is required; for registration or information call the Museum at 720-497-7650.

JULIA DOUGLAS DOLL COLLECTION EXHIBIT AT HIWAN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

Hiwan Homestead Museum is very excited to announce its newest exhibit, “Miss Julia’s Dolls: Favorites from the Collection” scheduled January 17-April 29, 2012. Julia Douglas, sister to Charles Winfred Douglas, and Evergreen’s first librarian, amassed a large collection of dolls from around the world. These dolls represent at least 20 different countries or regions of the world and were made for export, representing the native dress or ceremonial costumes of their country of origin. These early 1900s dolls were favorites of those first library patrons, and Hiwan Homestead Museum is pleased to present an assortment of these dolls to a new generation of the public.
