The Buffalo Bill Birthday celebration will include the opening of “Oskate Wicasa,” a special exhibit about the Indians who performed in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.  The exhibit will include a very rare collection of hand-colored photographs from 1901 plus posters, artifacts, and other materials associated with such show Indians as Short Bull, a leader of the Ghost Dance.

Best-selling and award-winning mystery writer Margaret Coel will be a featured guest of the event.  She will talk about her latest novel Buffalo Bill’s Dead Now, which revolves around Chief Black Heart, an Arapaho performer with the Wild West. Other featured guests will be dancers from the Denver March Pow Wow.

A special hands-on experience will be the chance to paint and raise the museum’s new tepee.  Martin Knife Chief and his wife Gale will direct the painting of the tepee with traditional Lakota symbols and oversee its raising.

As is done every year, everyone gathered for the event will sing “Happy Birthday” to Buffalo Bill at noon.  The Western Music Association’s Female Poet of the Year and songstress Susie Knight will be joined by Rex Rideout, musical star of the movie “Cowboys and Aliens,” in leading the singing.  Free cake and ice cream will be distributed afterwards as Knight and Rideout provide further musical entertainment.  Other activities that have become traditions at this celebration will include buffalo chip throwing and the opportunity to pose for pictures with the Buffalo Bill look-a-likes and other costumed re-enactors who attend the occasion.

A Carnival is Coming: Children’s Tea at Hiwan Homestead Museum

Celebrate the summer with a carnival. Youngsters ages 6 to 12 are invited to step right up
and enjoy the fun! Hiwan Homestead Museum is hosting a childrens’ Carnival Tea Party on Monday, July 16, 2012 from 12:00-1:30 PM, Carnival-themed food and activities will be featured. Oil Painters of America Brings National Juried Exhibition to Colorado for the First Time

The Oil Painters of America (OPA) will hold its 21st National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils at the Evergreen Fine Art Gallery, in Evergreen, Colorado, June 22 – July 21, 2012. Artists, collectors and art enthusiasts will find an unparalleled collection of traditional oil paintings representative of the highest quality of work being produced by professional oil painters today. An opening reception will be held for artists, collectors, the public and the press on Friday, June 22 from 5:00 – 8:00pm.

OPA’s membership is comprised of 3,600 artists from across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Over the years, OPA’s National Exhibition has garnered a reputation for being one of the premier art shows in the country, receiving just over 2,000 submissions each year for consideration. Of those, only two hundred artists are selected to be a part of this exhibition. Total awards for this year’s National Exhibition are expected to exceed $80,000, including a $25,000 Gold Medal award.

Hiwan Homestead Museum announces a new exhibit opening May 8, 2012.   “Cadillac Canyon: Evergreen’s Upper Bear Creek 1920s-1960s” delves into high society along Upper Bear Creek in Evergreen. Did you ever wonder how high society folks lived and played in Evergreen? Come see “Cadillac Canyon” to find out. See which movie stars visited resorts such as Troutdale-in-the-Pines and Greystone! Learn about dude ranches such as T-S! See the majestic mountain homes that were built in Evergreen’s glory years!

DISCOVERY DAYS: NATIVE AMERICANS!

Discovery Days at Hiwan Homestead Museum is about learning through play.  This summer the Discovery Days three-day summer camp will engage and excite kids about history by exploring the living legacies of Native Americans through their culture, stories, and arts and crafts.  Children who have completed Kindergarten through 3^rd Grade will make Pueblo-style pottery, learn traditional survival and hunting skills and explore Native American culture in a full-size tipi!
